Engine and Transmission

The standard engine option on the GMC Sierra 2500 is a 6.6L V8 gas engine. This engine yields an impressive 401 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 464 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. For enhanced performance, there’s an available 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8 engine that supplies 470 horsepower at 2800 rpm and 975 lb.-ft. of torque at 1600 rpm.

Both engine options on the Sierra 2500 are paired with an electronically controlled Allison 10-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. This transmission includes Tow/Haul mode and Auto Grade Braking that downshifts when needed, helping slow the vehicle on downhill grades.

Towing and Hauling

With the available 6.6L Duramax engine, you can reach a maximum towing capacity of up to 22,070 pounds in your Sierra 2500. All trims come with a GMC Trailering Package that provides a hitch, hitch platform, a 2.5″ receiver hitch, 4-pin and 7-pin connectors, a 7-wire electrical harness, and a 7-pin sealed connector. This package includes Hitch Guidance, a digital feature that creates a visual guideline for attaching a trailer to your hitch.
