Whether you want to go with your family on a memorable adventure or take a break from the routine with a group of friends, a day trip is always a great idea. Thanks to its location in the western part of the state, the city of Newark, OH, is a great base from where you can explore the urban and natural wonders of the region. These are some great and easy day trips you can go on from the city.

1. Columbus

As the capital and most populous urban area in the state of Ohio, the city of Columbus is a top-rated day trip destination for those who like museums, busy downtown areas, historical landmarks, and a vibrant cultural and gastronomic scene. With a population of over two million in its metropolitan area, Columbus has something to offer to all kinds of visitors.

The downtown Columbus area is located about 40 miles west of Newark, making it possible to reach it in just 40 minutes by car along route OH-161. After going for a walk along the beautiful Scioto Greenway, you can explore some of the city’s most famous landmarks, including the Ohio Statehouse, the National Veterans Memorial and Museum, and the John F. Wolfe Columbus Commons Park.

2. Wayne National Forest

If you are looking for a destination where you can get away from the urban bustle and enjoy some time in nature, Wayne National Forest is the place to be. Established in 1992 and covering an area of about 240,000 acres, this nature reserve features an extensive network of trails, making it an excellent destination for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.

The entrance to Wayne National Forest is located a little under 65 miles south of downtown Newark, making it possible to reach it in about one hour and 25 minutes by car. This nature reserve also features different campgrounds for those wanting to stay overnight, well-equipped picnic areas, as well as a dedicated recreation area along the shores of Lake Vesuvius.

3. Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve

Featuring an impressive four-mile-long sandstone formation along the banks of the Licking River, Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve is another excellent day trip destination for Newark locals. Established in 1975 and covering an area of about 950 acres, this nature reserve is a great destination for hiking, mountain biking, wildlife watching, and photography. Getting here from downtown Newark takes about 15 minutes by car, driving 11 miles along route OH-16.
