1. Go on Dawes Arboretum Winter Hikes

Experience the magic of a winter’s night at the Dawes Arboretum at 7770 Jacksontown Road here in Newark. The arboretum hosts their annual Winter Wonders Walk from 2 to 17 December between 6 and 9 p.m., when visitors can take a one-mile walk past illuminated trees on the paved Parkwoods Trail.

After the Winter Wonders Walk, visit the Daweswood House Museum, enjoy cups of steaming coffee and delicious food, chat with Santa Claus, and listen to live music. The guided Winter Solstice Night Hike through the arboretum’s gardens on the longest night of the year is usually around 21 December from 4:30 to 5:30.

2. Get Outdoorsy in the Parks

Wrap up warmly, put on your slip-resistant boots, and head to the parks in the area to have fun in the snow. During the winter, the parks are packed with outdoor excitement, especially when it snows, and the kids don’t have school. John C. Geller Park at 580 Cynthia Street in Heath, a short 4-mile drive away, is a favorite outdoor destination with excellent sledding hills.

Infirmary Mound Park, at 4251 Lancaster Road in Granville, 11 miles away, holds a special winter hike on the fourth Saturday of every month. All the Dawes Arboretum trails are open during the winter. You can join the winter night hikes on the third Friday of every month to learn more about astronomy and various nighttime creatures.

3. Hunt For Frosty the Snowman

One of the biggest fun events in the winter months is the hunt for Frosty the Snowman. Take a 26.8-mile drive to Zanesville for one of the biggest winter events in the region.

Every year the city hosts the month-long Snowman Trail Scavenger Hunt and hides seven life-size snowmen throughout downtown and in the Putnam Historic District. It’s much more fun than just winning the prize, but if you find every Frosty, you can walk away with Snowman Soup and a prize bag.

4. Catch a Performance at the Midland Theatre

On 20 December 1928, the magnificent Midland Theater at 36 North Park Place in Newark opened its doors for the first time to hundreds of people braving the cold to be the first to catch a glimpse of the town’s newest entertainment establishment. Today, the grand 1,800-seat historic theatre is a top-class performance venue for live music and other performing arts events and offers tours of the beautiful historic building.

While hitting the roads and having fun in the area this winter, consider a set of new wheels. Pop in at Coughlin Chevrolet Buick GMC Newark today to look at the exciting new models on the showroom floor.
