1. Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve

Visit Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve at 2200 Gratiot Road SE to unplug and immerse yourself in nature. There are tons of different well-maintained trails snaking throughout the park, including one extensive main paved trail. Since there’s so much variety, there’s bound to be a trail for every fitness level and need.

You can also go canoeing or kayaking, mountain biking, or picnicking in this preserve. All of the trails are well-marked, and there’s plenty of signage, exciting things to see, and plenty of places to stop and grab a great panoramic picture in this Ohio gem.

2. Dawes Arboretum

Dawes Arboretum at 7770 Jacksontown Rd. is one of Newark’s finest places for outdoor fun. It’s a sprawling attraction spanning about 2,000 acres. You’ll find beautiful, tree-lined paths, gardens full of flowers from all over the world, and plenty of conservation and educational programs for adults and children alike.

You’ll also find a lovely Japanese Garden, excellent opportunities for birding and wildlife spotting, and plenty of secluded and beautiful places to sit and picnic or reflect. You can walk through the arboretum or opt to take a comprehensive and informative car tour.

3. Hoback Park

Hoback Park at 42 Dorsey Mill Road E. is an enormous green space right in the heart of Heath, set on just over 20 acres of land. You’ll find plenty of outdoor play space, including a basketball court, baseball fields, and picnic spots. There are also playgrounds and hiking and biking trails that you can access from the park. If you want to experience the great outdoors in Heah, but don’t want to drive very far, Hoback Park is an excellent option.

All of these fantastic green spaces, parks, and outdoor destinations are well within driving distance of Newark.
