Drive on Over: 5 Hiking Trails Near Newark, OH

Licking County has nearly 50 miles of hiking trails to explore. Start your journey on one of our five favorite options near Newark, OH.

Ohio Canal Greenway

This 2.8-mile multipurpose trail follows the former towpath along the Ohio Canal, which means you'll enjoy beautiful water views and excellent bird watching on this out-and-back hike. Ohio Canal Greenway allows leashed pets as well as fishing in the canal. We like stopping for a photo op at the historic wooden covered bridge along the route.

You can access the trailhead at Canal Park, located in Hebron about 10 miles from Newark at 101 Canal Rd. Ohio Canal Greenway is open every day from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Chestnut Trail

Part of the Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve in Newark, this out-and-back trail spans just over 3 miles through mature hickory and pine forests (6.5 miles total). The Chestnut Trail runs along the edge of the gorge above the Licking River, where you can fish along the north shore. We usually plan a day trip to see the glorious spring wildflowers that bloom in this part of the preserve.

Pets are not permitted on the Chestnut Trail. You can hike in Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve daily from 30 minutes before dawn until 30 minutes after dusk. It's located at 2200 Gratiot Rd SE.

Taft Reserve North

Located in Heath about 5 miles from Newark, Taft Reserve North has nearly 10 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, horseback riding, and biking through its wooded lands and meadows. You can bring leashed dogs to this preserve, which is managed by the Licking Park District. Taft Reserve North is located at 10250 Flint Ridge Rd. It's open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset.

Lobdell Reserve

This Alexandria nature preserve about 15 miles from Newark has 8 miles of trails to explore. As you experience Lobdell Reserve, you'll be able to view flowing streams, views from towering cliffs, sprawling meadows, and dense forests. The park is located at 3100 Mounts Rd. While you're there, you can also check out the disc golf course.

Buckeye Scenic Trail

This 5.5-mile trail is one of the newest in Licking County and follows an old converted rail line. You can access one end at the intersection of Industrial Pkwy and Hopewell Dr, and you'll end up just east of Hebron near Lakewood High School. Along the way, you'll view farmland and pastures, and you can access businesses in both Heath and Hebron from the trail endpoints.
